Bitcoin's 65k Stalemate: Long-Term Holders Dump at a Loss While Short-Term Profit Takers Pile On

Weekly | MaxPanda |

The rally hit 65,000. Then it died.

Not from a whale sell-off. Not from a macro shock. From two opposing forces grinding the order book to dust: long-term holders bleeding realized losses, and short-term speculators cashing out month-old buys.

I’ve been tracking this through my ETF flow monitor and Glassnode UTXO data. The signal is clear: supply pressure is overwhelming demand. Floors are illusions until the bot sees the spread—and right now, the spread is collapsing.

Context: The Two-Headed Supply Beast

Bitcoin sits at 63,200, down from the week’s high. Post-ETF approval, the narrative shifted to institutional accumulation. And yes, BlackRock’s IBIT saw three consecutive days of inflows totaling $367.8 million. But that’s a Band-Aid on a hemorrhage.

Weekly ETF net flow: -$56 million. Monday alone bled $424 million. The institutions bought the dip, but they weren’t enough to absorb the selling from two distinct cohorts.

First, the long-term holders (LTHs)—wallets that haven’t moved coins in 155 days to 2 years. They’re underwater. Their realized price sits above 69,000. After the drop from 70k to 56k in June, they’ve been using every bounce to exit at a loss. Data from CryptoQuant shows LTH-to-exchange flow ratio spiking above 0.65—meaning more than 65% of coins hitting exchanges are coming from these distressed wallets. This is the same behavior we saw in late 2022 before the FTX crash. Not a good sign.

Second, the short-term holders (STHs). These are the buyers from the June 56k bottom. Their cost basis: ~69,000. They’re sitting on unrealized gains of 5-10%. And they’re taking profits aggressively. STH spent output profit ratio (SOPR) has been above 1.05 for a week, indicating profit-taking. Every time price touches 65k, they dump.

Result: a 65k ceiling built not on resistance, but on two supply walls.

Core: The Data That Proves the Stalemate

Let’s break down the numbers.

1. LTH Realized Losses Over the past 7 days, LTH realized losses have increased 40% week-over-week. Glassnode’s LTH Spent Output Volume in Loss is now at levels not seen since March 2020. These are not small fish—the average UTXO age in loss is 18 months. This is the “capitulation of the patient.”

2. STH Cost Basis as Resistance The STH realized price is 69,100. That’s the average price of coins moved in the last 155 days. Since most of those coins were bought during the June rebound, any move above 65k triggers immediate profit-taking. I’ve seen this dynamic in my Uniswap V2 work—when a tightly clustered cost basis acts as both support and resistance, the market oscillates until the cluster is exhausted. Here, it’s pure resistance.

3. ETF Flow Reality The three-day inflow streak was a rebound from Monday’s $424M outflow. Net week flow: -$56M. That’s not institutional conviction; that’s rebalancing. My real-time monitor shows that the bulk of inflows came from a single fund (IBIT), while Grayscale (GBTC) continues to bleed. The net effect is neutral at best.

4. Option Barrier at 70-80k Deribit open interest in calls between 70k and 80k is $4.5 billion notional. Market makers are delta-hedging these positions. As price approaches 70k, they sell spot to cover gamma. This creates a mechanical sell wall that reinforces the STH resistance.

5. Bitcoin Regime Score: The Contradiction CryptoQuant’s Regime Score has climbed from negative to +34.7, with 78% confidence. This composite of funding rates, open interest, and ETF activity signals improvement. But price hasn’t followed. Why? Because the score measures momentum, not supply absorption. The selling pressure is still higher velocity.

Contrarian: The Market Is Ignoring the Real Blind Spot

Everyone is focused on the 70k option barrier and the STH cost basis. But the real blind spot is the exhaustion of LTH selling.

Since June, LTHs have been dumping at a loss for 8 consecutive weeks. Historically, such streaks last 6-12 weeks before supply dries up. We’re at week 8. UTXO age distribution shows that the oldest coins (1-2 year band) are already 70% spent. The remaining LTHs are either dead hands or waiting for higher prices.

If LTH selling stops in the next 2 weeks, the supply overhang vanishes. The only remaining resistance would be STH profit-taking at 69k. And if ETF inflows resume at a steady pace (say, $100M/day), that 69k wall gets breached quickly.

Speed is the only metric that survives the crash. The market is slow to price in the pending supply vacuum. When it does, the move from 63k to 70k will happen in hours, not days.

Takeaway: Watch the Regime Score, Not the Price

Forward-looking judgment: Ignore the daily noise. Track the Regime Score crossing above 50 with >80% confidence. If that happens and weekly ETF net flows turn positive, the 70k breakout is imminent. If the score reverses below 20, expect a retest of 60k.

Rhetorical question: When the LTH supply dries up and the banks start buying again, will you be positioned for the compression, or will you be waiting for a pullback that never comes?

Execution tip: Set alerts for CryptoQuant’s Regime Score >50 and SoSoValue weekly ETF flow >0. If both trigger within 24 hours, go long with a stop at 61,500.

Data over drama. Execution. Not expectation.
